About marathonbnb

marathonbnb is a free, unofficial guide to where to stay for the world's biggest marathons and road races, for runners and for the people who come to cheer.

I'm Jim McDannald, a runner based in Montreal. I race everything from 5Ks to the marathon: local races around the city, the P'tit Train du Nord Marathon in the Laurentians and the Barcelona Half Marathon. Right now I'm training for a spring half marathon, and most of my runs start at 5 or 6 am, Montreal winters included.

I've also been on the coaching side. I was a volunteer assistant coach for McGill University's cross country and track and field teams, and I now volunteer with Friends of McGill Track & Field, the alumni group working to bring the varsity program back.

Why I built it

Every race trip starts with the same question: where do I sleep so race morning is easy?

The answers are spread across race pages, forums and hotel sites, and they rarely say how far the start really is, how you get there at 6 am or where your family should stand to see you. I like solving problems like this with technology, so I built the guide I wanted: one page per race, in your language, with live prices on a map.

How we pick areas to stay

For each race we start with the course: the start, the finish and the race morning transport. We look for areas you can walk to the start from first, then areas near the finish, places on the course where supporters can cheer, and one cheaper area with a direct train.

Each area comes with a live map of hotels and rentals for race weekend, so you see real availability and prices, not a list that goes out of date.

Where the details come from

Race dates, start and finish locations, transport and hotel terms come from the official race sites and local transport operators. Each race page lists its sources and the date we last checked them.

Some details, like start times and expo hours, come out closer to race day. We update the pages as they do. Always check the official race site before you travel.

How the site is paid for

marathonbnb is free to use. The lodging maps come from our booking partner, Stay22. When you book a stay through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We pick areas for how close they are to the race, not for the commission.

Not the official site

marathonbnb is independent. It is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any race organizer, the Abbott World Marathon Majors or Airbnb.
