Where to stay for the 2027 Tokyo Marathon

In short

The Tokyo Marathon 2027 is on Sunday 7 March 2027. It starts at 9:10 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and finishes on Gyoko-dori in front of Tokyo Station. Runners can stay in Nishi-Shinjuku and walk to the start, or stay by Tokyo Station, take one direct train to Shinjuku in the morning (about 15 minutes) and walk back after the finish. Supporters do best in Ginza or Nihonbashi, on the course and on the Ginza Line. Bibs must be collected in person at the EXPO (4 to 6 March 2027), so plan to arrive by Saturday and book now.

Plan ahead Book now: bibs are collected in person at the EXPO from Thursday 4 March 2027 (last chance Saturday 6 March at 17:30), so most runners need a room from Thursday or Friday.

Watch the race

Ride the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, which links Nihonbashi (km 13), Asakusa (km 18) and Ginza (km 33), then walk to the meet-up area by the Imperial Palace.

  1. km 13 (mile 8)

    Nihonbashi

Come up at Mitsukoshimae station (Ginza and Hanzomon lines) for the first pass. Then take the Ginza Line straight to Asakusa: front runners need about 15 minutes for the next 5 km and the back of the field about 45, so skip this stop if your runner is fast.

  2. km 18 (mile 11)

    Asakusa, Kaminarimon

From Asakusa station (Ginza Line and Toei Asakusa Line) walk to Kaminarimon, where runners turn just after 18 km. Then ride the Ginza Line straight to Ginza: even the leaders need over 40 minutes to reach km 33.

  3. km 33 (mile 20)

    Ginza

Watch on Ginza's main street with about 9 km to go. You cannot cross the course on foot, so use subway passages and footbridges, then head toward Yurakucho and Hibiya for the finish.

  4. Meet your runner

The finish area is closed to the public. In 2026 the meet-up area was next to the finish beside the Imperial Palace Outer Garden (stations Nijubashimae, Otemachi, Hibiya and Yurakucho), and runners took about 30 minutes from the line to the changing area, so agree a spot in advance.

The official hotels, explained

The official travel agency, KINTETSU INTERNATIONAL (KNT), sells accommodation packages for runners in Shinjuku (start), around Tokyo Station (finish) and other parts of Tokyo. They do not include race entry, and the public page does not show minimum nights, deposit or cancellation terms, so check these before you pay. Official tour packages that include an entry are sold separately by regional International Travel Partners.

Questions

Where should I stay for the Tokyo Marathon?

Runners: Nishi-Shinjuku to walk to the start, or Marunouchi by Tokyo Station to walk back from the finish. Supporters: Ginza or Nihonbashi, on the course and on the Ginza Line. Ikebukuro is a good value base, 8 minutes by train from Shinjuku.

Is it better to stay near the start or the finish?

It is a point-to-point race, so you take one train either way. We suggest the finish end for most runners: the morning ride from Tokyo Station to Shinjuku is about 15 minutes on the JR Chuo Line, and after the race you walk to your room. Pick Nishi-Shinjuku if a short walk to the start matters most to you.

How do I get to the start on race morning?

Tochomae station on the Toei Oedo Line is right at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, and JR Shinjuku station is about 10 minutes on foot. In 2026 the start area opened at 7:00 and the gates closed at 8:45. No cars or buses can drop you at the start.

Where can supporters watch the Tokyo Marathon?

Nihonbashi (km 13), Asakusa at Kaminarimon (km 18) and Ginza (km 33) are all on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, so you can see your runner three times. You cannot cross the course on foot, so use subway passages and footbridges.

Do I have to pick up my bib in person?

Yes. Packet pick-up is at the Tokyo Marathon EXPO at Tokyo Big Sight (South Halls) on 4 and 5 March 2027 from 10:00 to 20:30 and on 6 March from 10:00 to 17:30. Bring photo ID: nobody can collect for you and there is no pickup on race day.

When should I book my hotel for the Tokyo Marathon 2027?

Now. Lottery results came out on 11 September 2026, the field grows to 40,000 in 2027, and you must be in Tokyo for packet pick-up by Saturday 6 March, so book from Thursday or Friday.
